Please forgive my lack of posting, I haven't forgotten...
It's 2 weeks till school starts for my kids and my house is a wreck, the kids have been fighting, and I look forward to the weekends so I can go to work! That's terrible of me, isn't it?
"Send them to Summer Camp," you say. I did... but summer camp just didn't last long enough this year. My son went to Cub Scout camp, but that was only for a week... so we sent him to another one! They also had swim lessons, but again, that only lasted 2 weeks. But in truth SUMMER VACATION IS TOO DAMN LONG!
I think New York State should adopt the schedule they have in California, their breaks are shorter and the kids don't have time to get bored and/or forget all they learned last year. They'd be better prepared for the "real world" where no one (except people who work in the schools) has a 3 month vacation in a year.

On a related note, one of my friends is sending her son off to college. I am sending her lots of positive feelings as I know she'll miss her oldest boy. She assured me that she wasn't going to cry, but I have a feeling once she'd said her last good byes there were if not actual tears, at least some little sadness that he's passed a major milestone in life and stepped into adulthood.
Good luck, Ben!

  1. If your friend is like me, she will cry herself to sleep each night for several days... then cry at the holidays he would normally be with them, but is now too far away to come home. Perhaps it's different when you still have children at home to deal with.
As for NY public schools vs CA.... It's not just California that has the year-round school. It might be difficult for the camps (if they can't count on the kids being out), etc, but over all, I agree it would be better for the kids to have less time off at one time.
